Welcome To The World Of Miss Veronica Vera

In my 40+ years as author, artist, sex worker and activist – now a doctor of human sexuality -I have led the life of a sexual libertine, chronicling the most outre corners of the NYC sex scene including the lovable outlaws and eccentrics who were its key players. As an adult movie star, I used my body as well as my words to develop my life as an ‘arthole’ liberating and empowering myself and others. In 1989, I founded the world’s first transgender and cross-dressing academy as a safe place for people to explore gender expression. The theories and realizations that I came to via all of my explorations, my tireless and often raunchy research have proven to be even more relevant today. That is why I have decided to share my archives as well as my current thoughts, and excerpts from my upcoming memoir.

40 years ago I began my friendship with the great feminist erotic pioneer, Candida Royalle, who is now the subject of the recently published excellent biography, ‘Candida Royalle and The Sexual Revolution’ by Jane Kamensky. Let me take you back to the beginning of her historic career with this piece from 1984 – an article I wrote about her first film produced by Femme Studios. Candida directed the first porn ever focused around a women’s point of view and experience of pleasure. Her goal was to break through the male gaze in an industry made by and for men. Candida and I were beloved friends and sisters of Club90, and I was honored to have written the first article publicizing and supporting her work.…Read More

Porn fans, feminist historians and so many others will be thrilled with the publication of Candida Royalle & The Sexual Revolution, by Jane Kamensky. Candida, known as the founder of feminist porn genre had a big, bold life. More personally, she was one of my Club 90 sisters. Chapter 19 in the book is devoted to Club 90. It’s fitting that I share a story I wrote back then of how our group formed and the pivotal collaboration we called “Deep Inside Porn Stars.”…Read More

For this Manhattan painter, lowdown sex inspired highbrow art. In this article I met and interviewed Valentin Tatransky about his paintings inspired by pornography – which he describes as ‘a celebration of humanity.’ Valentin was well-known as an art critic in NYC by this time, but we connected over his artworks which honored the gods and goddesses of the x-rated screen. I share this article to portray his art and legacy.…Read More

The late 1970’s were a time of great sexual liberty for me. It was a time when my fantasies became reality. Delicious sex, two men at once, amidst gorgeous art in a decadent mansion. My first experience with a woman, naked musicales in a blizzard and French pastry. This is when good-girl Mary became outrageous Veronica. An excerpt from my memoir for patrons.…Read More

No one was more surprised than me to find me in 1985 on set as the star of another X-rated film. My porn debut in Consenting Adults (1982) had been unplanned. I had come into the business to be a writer and that’s where I focused my attention. I was a high heeled journalist, since 1983, recounting my own adventures and the sex life of the city each month in my Adam magazine column Veronica Vera’s New York. But, one day producers Vince Benedetti and his partner Marc Roberts came to see me and made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.…Read More

In 1988, an essay and a large photo of me were included in “Eros & Architecture” an art show and catalog produced at Torch Gallery, Amsterdam. In the photo I am standing practically bare-assed in skimpy lingerie on the steps of the U.S.Federal building at the corner of Broad Street and Wall, while the New York Stock Exchange looms in the background. The photo and essay together were a piece I titled “My Body is A Temple.” The text began: I’ve always felt at home in a church or a temple or even a building that reminded me of one by its spaciousness, its adornments….Looking back on it now I understand this art piece revealed a method to my madness. It explains the motivation behind so many of my adventures before and since. Perhaps an even better title could be “Finding My Church” because that has been my life’s mission. Here is the complete essay.…Read More

This article describes the international 1986 gathering of sex workers at the European Parliament in Brussels in, organized by the mother of the modern sex workers’ rights movement Margo St James (1937-2021) . Myself and Annie attended as both delegates and journalists. This is the event that kick-started my own activism for sex workers rights, which I continue to this day. Yearly on December 17th we come together for a candlelight vigil to honor sex workers we have lost each year, this year including a special dedication to Pricilla Alexander. The work to decriminalize and de-stigmatize sex work continues. Rest in Power Margo and Pricilla. …Read More

Write about what you know, they say. So in my initial monthly column, I wrote about Wall Street where I landed my first NYC job and where I learned that sex was an economic commodity. The real treasures were the stories.…Read More
