Welcome To The World Of Miss Veronica Vera

In my 40+ years as author, artist, sex worker and activist – now a doctor of human sexuality -I have led the life of a sexual libertine, chronicling the most outre corners of the NYC sex scene including the lovable outlaws and eccentrics who were its key players. As an adult movie star, I used my body as well as my words to develop my life as an ‘arthole’ liberating and empowering myself and others. In 1989, I founded the world’s first transgender and cross-dressing academy as a safe place for people to explore gender expression. The theories and realizations that I came to via all of my explorations, my tireless and often raunchy research have proven to be even more relevant today. That is why I have decided to share my archives as well as my current thoughts, and excerpts from my upcoming memoir.

This article describes the international 1986 gathering of sex workers at the European Parliament in Brussels in, organized by the mother of the modern sex workers’ rights movement Margo St James (1937-2021) . Myself and Annie attended as both delegates and journalists. This is the event that kick-started my own activism for sex workers rights, which I continue to this day. Yearly on December 17th we come together for a candlelight vigil to honor sex workers we have lost each year, this year including a special dedication to Pricilla Alexander. The work to decriminalize and de-stigmatize sex work continues. Rest in Power Margo and Pricilla. …Read More

Write about what you know, they say. So in my initial monthly column, I wrote about Wall Street where I landed my first NYC job and where I learned that sex was an economic commodity. The real treasures were the stories.…Read More

My first visit to Plato’s Retreat was in 1978 when the new swing club attracted throngs. Plato’s moved to a huge new location across from a MacDonald’s on W.34th street. Folks joked Plato’s could also boast that it served millions. Some couples claimed it saved marriages.By 1985 founder Larry Levenson was in jail, and A.I.D.S. struck fear in the population. Plato’s “Night of the Unusual” was a last hurrah.…Read More

Show World Emporium was the beating heart or really, the throbbing clit of New York’s commercial sex center. I often interviewed the performers who worked there. On this day, I decided to join the labor force and be a booth baby.…Read More

I re-examine the wild side of the city under the searching guidance of my friend Italian pornologist Michele Capozzi… “Don’t call me a journalist,” said my friend Michele Capozzi. “I am an ‘urban explorer’.”  Actually his business card listed about thirty occupations including author, go-go boy, gigolo, producer…. But urban explorer was the most appropriate.…Read More

Along with Seka “the platinum princess”, Al Goldstein, and other experts, I accepted our government’s invitation to enlighten a Senate Judiciary Committee on the true status of women in pornography. This testimony became part of the infamous Meese Commission Report of 1985 and added my erotica to the Congressional record.…Read More

Sometimes you don’t know a part of the city until a tourist comes to visit. I’m sure I would have eventually found my way to Belle De Jour’s S/M fantasy theatre but a horny Frenchman hastened my arrival. I returned on other occasions, once with a foot fetishist in tow.…Read More
